Empty stage before soundcheck

A live set in a dark room

Small rooms are the best rooms for live music and the hardest rooms to shoot. The stage is close, the light is colored and moving, and there's nowhere to hide a photographer. SHE at Ray Leo's in Evansville had all of that: red string lights over the band, a green wash for the slower songs, and a stage small enough to feel the kick drum through the floor.

Start before doors

The empty room is part of the story. Gear cases, pedalboards, a stage waiting for people. Those frames end up on the flyer for the next show more often than the loud ones do.

Work three angles

  • The floor. Shoot from where the crowd stands. It's the view people remember.
  • The side. Profiles under stage light, hands on the strings, the singer leaning into the mic.
  • Behind the band. The back of a guitarist facing the drums, with the room glowing beyond. One of these per set is worth the walk.

Let the color be the color

Stage light is red, green, and blue for a reason. We don't fight it in the edit. A face half lit in red tells you more about the night than a clean, corrected version would. The job in the edit is keeping skin readable and blacks deep, not making it look like daylight.

Get something out fast

A band's audience is most interested the morning after. A handful of edits and a short vertical cut early keep the night going online while the full gallery follows.
